2017 No Sleep Adventure

Racer Communication 1

Greetings Racers!

Here is Racer Communication 1. We’ll send a final update closer to the start.

The 2017 No Sleep Adventure is less than a month away! We are in the final stages of vetting the course, and we'll begin setting checkpoints soon. We’ve got a great course lined up for you that shouldn’t disappoint!

With all the rain in the area this spring be prepared for lots of mosquitoes, ticks, stinging nettles, and poison ivy on the course. It’s a rocky area so many of the roads and trails dry out quickly but if the rain keeps up in the coming weeks, you’ll find plenty of mud and even standing water!

Camping

There will be plenty of lakeside space available for group camping at the start/finish located at Duck Bay Shelter/Campground. Duck Bay accommodations include a few group fire pits and a very limited number of picnic tables. There are men’s and women's pit toilets as well as access to potable water. All campers will also have access to a very nice heated shower house in the main Oak Point Campground just a short distance away.

The cost of camping at Duck Bay will be $10 per tent per night and $5 per hammock per night. This is per tent, not per person, so you might consider sharing a larger tent. No RVs are allowed at the group camp area. Money for camping at the group camp area will be collected by No Sleep Adventures at racer check in. Please let us know if you plan to camp with us at Duck Bay. We do not keep any of the money, it all goes to the campground concessionaire.

Camping is also available in the Oak Point Campground with primitive and electric sites. Electric sites are $22 per night per tent/camper and each additional tent is $12 per night. Primitive camping is $12 per tent per night. Each site in Oak Point Campground has its own fire pit and picnic tables as well as access to water.

The campground does not take reservations. While there is a possibility the Oak Point Campground could fill up over the weekend, we should have plenty of space to accommodate anyone wanting to camp at Duck Bay.

For questions about camping in Oak Point Campground contact Nick Randolph at 618-638-8340.

There are other lodging opportunities with campgrounds, cabins, and some hotels in the area. www.shawneeforest.com/Lodging

Parking

Parking at the race start/finish is limited so we appreciate any carpooling you can do. Once the main lot fills up we will park cars on the right side of the road heading out of the Duck Bay area. You will be able to unload gear at the start/finish TA before parking. We will be able to accommodate all vehicles but late comers will have a short walk/ride back to the start.

Race Start Times

Please note updated race start times. These have been updated online as well. The 8-hour race start is 8 a.m., with a race cutoff of 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The 24-hour race will now start at 9 a.m., with a cutoff of 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

Transition Areas

The race start/finish will be utilized as a TA in both races. Pop-up style canopies may be set up for Racers to use in the TA. All pop-up canopies must be placed in the designated transition areas. You may not use your vehicle as a TA. Duck Bay campers may use their tent/campsite as the TA. You will be allowed to access any food, gear and water you have at this TA.

Food

A post-race meal will be served for both the 24-hour and 8-Hour races beginning approximately one hour before race cut off. There will be no pre-race meal provided, so please plan accordingly. Food options are limited in Golconda. Several of the restaurants are typically very busy on Friday evenings with local crowds. The local restaurants are the Diver Down, Sweetwater Saloon, Dairy Barn and the Old Mansion. Some may take reservations. If you are going to eat in Golconda, we recommend trying to be an early bird to beat the crowds. There are plenty of restaurant options in Paducah, Vienna, and Harrisburg a little farther away.

Gear

The gear list is posted and up to date. We have one change: 8-hour teams are allowed to bring their own PFDs and paddles for the paddle section. For the 24-hour race we are still asking that racers use only provided paddles and PFDs. Note that climbing gear is only needed for the 24-hour race.

Bike and Paddle Gear Drops

8-hour racers will have a bike drop on Saturday morning which will open at 6:30 a.m. The bike drop will be approximately 15 to 20 minutes away from the race start/finish. 8-hour racers can stage their paddle gear at their campsite or TA at Duck Bay.

24-hour racers will not have a bike drop or paddle drop.

Maps

8-hour maps will be a combination of pre-plotted points and team plotted points. All teams will need to have a 1:24000 scale UTM plotter and be familiar with using it. If you have never plotted UTM coordinates, let us know ahead of time. We will have plenty of help available at the pre-race meeting to assist with plotting if needed. For 8-hour racers we will also put out master map on Saturday morning to check plotting.

24-hour racers will plot all checkpoints. You will receive maps and coordinates on Friday night at the pre-race meeting.

Maps, other than the race map and any supplemental maps provided, are prohibited.

Ropes Update

The 24-hour course this year is going to have an intensive ropes section thanks to one of our premiere sponsors, Vertical Excape!

Be prepared for a rappel as well as an ascent and/or a top rope belayed climb. Mechanical ascenders will be provided. Make sure you have all other required climbing gear listed on the gear list. You may bring climbing shoes (not required) but you will have to carry them for that section of the race.

We are planning to have an opportunity for ascent practice and gear familiarization at the Duck Bay start/finish on Friday afternoon during check-in times and again for a short time following the pre-race meeting. All ropes sections will be manned by professionally certified climbing instructors.

Race Coverage

We will try to provide a few updates on social media during the race but due to spotty reception, we may not be able to update as often as we’d like. Spot trackers are allow as long as they don’t have a display screen.
